A Great Tour! ... and March Events

First, a warm thank you to all of those who attended the tour of Rich and Laura's home and helped us officially kick off the formation of the Klamath Leaf! There was a lot of interest in the tour, so we're hoping to host another within the year! Stay tuned for more events. Also, a special thank you to Rich and Laura for hosting and helping to organize a great event!

Green drinks for March will be held Friday, March 5th, at 5pm at Mia and Pia's. Probably won't be warm enough to sit outside yet... but we'll see! Otherwise, we'll grab some tables inside and sample the current brews.

The Klamath Leaf will be joining other organizations as part of the Alternative Design Center at the Klamath Basin Home Builders Association Home and Garden Show March 5th, 6th and 7th. The Home and Garden show will be held at the Klamath County Fairgrounds Events Center. Interested in learning more about LEED, the Living Building Challenge, or becoming a member of the Cascadia GBC Klamath Leaf? Come talk to a Klamath Leaf member or grab some additional information. Admission is $3 for the entire weekend, or $2 with a can of food for the food bank. Hope to see you there!

Please join our Klamath Leaf on a tour of Rich and Laura Roseberg's home for a closer look at passive solar design, radiant floor heat, and native plant landscaping. This is a great opportunity to learn more about design options for new homes or renovation projects, and to meet or learn about the contractors who have been involved!

Transformational Lecture Series (Bend): Featuring Kevin Cavenaugh

When Kevin Cavenaugh completed his Loeb Fellowship at Harvard University Graduate School of Design in 2008, he focused his studies on urban planning, and, more specifically, the regulatory framework that tends to dampen innovative ideas. Kevin’s design efforts in Portland are a prime example of bringing groundbreaking urban designs to life. He has overseen the design, development and management of several projects, including Burnside Rocket (1111 E. Burnside Street), a LEED Platinum, mixed-use building which features ground source heat pumps that use the earth's constant temperature to thermally condition air before entering the building. Now, Kevin has expanded his focus to explore how innovative, compact urban projects can be done without reliance on bank loans. He is currently leading a team of fourteen architects, each designing his/her own “parcel” at 14 Parcels (SW Water Avenue and SW Arthur Street), a truly unique residential project both in terms of design and size. With his work throughout Portland, Kevin continues to shift the current paradigms of urban design.

The Central Oregon Green and Solar Homes Tour is one of the leading green home tours in the nation. This year's tour will showcase the greenest homes in Central Oregon that incorporate significant use of solar or other renewable energies, new and reclaimed green building materials, and low energy consumption and water conservation technologies. The Tour will kick off with a keynote speech by renowned Northwest architect Nathan Good, and will wrap-up with a People's Choice Award and celebration.

Shrink your carbon footprint! Tour-goers can park & ride and enjoy all 6 homes on the Tour. All buses run continuously and all stop at each home for drop-off & pick-up. A bus pass holder can get on/off at any scheduled bus stop throughout the day. Parking will be available at the Bend Senior Center. Shuttle registration available on the registration site. This Green and Solar Home Tour is part of the Oregon Green and Solar Tours coordinated by Solar Oregon and is a part of the American Solar Energy Society's National Solar Tour.

Klamath Leaf Members Teleconference with Gina Franzosa, OR Director of Cascadia GBC

Members of the Klamath Leaf filled the conference room at Precision Structural Engineering and phoned in from out of town to engage with Gina Franzosa during a teleconference last week. We discussed aspects of Leaf obligations and efforts, interaction with speakers from out of town, development of connections with local entities, marketing, and outreach. Gina's insights were incredibly useful to the group and we came away with action items that will last us through 2009 and beyond. There is much work to be done, but we have the support of the greater Cascadia Green Building Council. Klamath Falls has much to offer to and much to learn from the greater green building movement and the Leaf is looking forward to the work ahead.

Final Green Building panel discussion at Klamath Falls downtown library

Thursday evening, May 28th, is the third talk of our series at the library. Each one has been well attended and great questions and ideas put forth. This one promises even more. Gina Franzosa, Oregon Director for Cascadia will be here to speak and the Medford staff of Energy Trust, along with a few of their corporate folks will be coming in as audience members. Speaking will be OREC representatives Linda Riley and the director, Tom Chester; from SCOEDD, Betty Riley; Tim Thompson, WHPacific engineer and only local LEED AP; and Nabil Taha, Ph.D, P.E., owner of Precision Structural Engineering, the foremost green engineering firm in southern Oregon.

This event will be the kick off for the Energy Trust's Energy Fair on May 3oth at KCC from 10-4 with workshops, presentations, booths and vendors, food and lots of information and demonstrations.

Parr Lumber offers FSC Certified wood in Klamath Falls!

Bill Trent of Parr Lumber Company on Spring St and Main says:
The Current facilities that are (soon) FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) Certified, for at least the next year, will be in Bend, which will handle Central Oregon and Southern Oregon, to include K Falls and Medford.

Please let those who you think might be interested know our company fleet is all FSC certified but the products are available through PLC we now have the logistics worked out to service Southern Oregon by transferring it out of our Bend location or on our distribution trucks into our yard.

Although we will not be stocking the material, with a little forethought to your needs, we can have it here when the project is ready to start. I am personally really excited about this. I have been working with our FSC/Green team trying to get this into the market. It’s not perfect yet but at least those who wish to make responsible choices have the avenue to do so.

I know in these times it is hard for people to pay the extra to get FSC products, but I believe by applying a pull through technique, we can get those mills into a production level that will make the pricing competitive with the everyday market.

Living Building Financial Study Available

Members of the Klamath GBC traveled to Bend where Jason McLellan, CEO of Cascadia GBC, spoke about the Living Building Challenge. A very thorough study of the costs of implementing living buildings in 4 distinct climate zones has been completed by Cascadia GBC with assistance from SERA Architects and Skanska among others. As the blog is now public and on the radar of the core group, I thought it appropriate to submit our first post. The blog is currently only accessible by me (CJ) but once a post is made anyone can submit comments. So, conversations can be had and archived. This seems like a good way of documenting our progress! Thanks to you all for using your considerable energy and talents to promote green building in Klamath Falls, and thanks to Paula for getting the ball rolling. I see very good things ahead!
